Clockworks Press featured in the NY Post Holiday Travel and Gifts section |
Holly Brown: Clockworks Press | As many of you know, in addition to running Clockworks Press I am also a full time visual art teacher at an all girls private school in Manhattan. I have been back working at the school since August 24th and with students since August 31st. During these uncertain times, I hope that I am bringing some normalcy back to the lives of these children and myself. It hasn't been easy with all the adjustments in our routines, but I truly believe we will be stronger in the end! During the end of my summer vacation I had the unique opportunity to be a part of season one of the NY Denim Hangs podcast. I have been a member of this NY based group for a couple years now and it has truly opened many doors for me both personally and professionally. The group is filled with denim experts, enthusiasts, makers and mills. I was honored when they asked me to talk about my journey and printing on denim! I hope you will take time to listen to all the episodes as they have worked hard to curate a variety for the launch of season one. |

Clockworks Press is proud to be a participating artist in
the #iclapfor project by Artist Ian Berry!
A little backstory:
Ian Berry and I have been friends for a few years now. We first met in person at NY Denim Days 2017 where he was a featured artist and then again during his Secret Garden Installation at The Children's Museum in NYC and most recently at Denim Days Amsterdam. I have always been mesmerized with the way Ian creates his images using only pieces of denim, no dyes, no bleach only the natural fades. In addition to being an amazing artist, I am proud to call him a friend. When he asked if I would participate in his I Clap For project there was no hesitation, my answer was a big YES!
I Clap For
It began with an idea between father, Ian Berry and his son - now the aim for “I Clap For” is to create a platform to create a community and message of thanks during the COVID-19 pandemic - and continuing on past this moment in time to remember all of those who risked their lives on the frontlines.

The Story
Ian Berry lives & works from his London studio and was moved by the clapping, at 8pm on Thursdays every week in the UK. His son couldn’t wait for Thursdays to come, often asking ‘is it Thursday yet?’ and preparing for it. He saw how his friends in New York and elsewhere did it everyday, at 7pm.
With trying to get on with work in the studio while home schooling, they came up with the idea to make a clapping piece through the material he is best known for - denim. It was his son Elliott, 6, who took the photo of his hands. Ian sent it on as a simple card to say thank to some of his friends in the health service, many who had been sick.
While watching a film on a projector it was Elliott that said, can we put the clapping on there? Soon they were beaming it off the balcony of his home and an idea was born. . .

Who wants to clap alone? Ian Berry’s Clapping Hands were projected on many buildings but now he’s not alone, up step these International Artists to join him in their own way.
It is truly an honor to be a participating artist in this incredible initiative highlighting all the frontline workers around the world! Thank you, Ian!

Lately my prints are taking on new meaning for me, the places I saw everyday are no longer part of my daily routine. I miss the daily grind and grit of my beloved NYC.
Like many, I have struggled with knowing what to say and post on social media. I’ve mainly posted things to help, be it links for kids art projects or other resources. During this challenging time when we feel isolated and alone, due to social distancing it is inherent that we keep in contact with loved ones, friends and colleagues in a socially responsible way. I have found using technology to communicate is helping. I miss the in person contact, but I know that we are #strongertogether .
As a child I was an avid Mr Rogers fan so I will leave one of my favorite quotes to end this post. .
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people helping.” -Fred Rogers
I hope you are healthy and safe, please know I am thinking of you. 💙
Women in Denim celebrate | In honor of International Women's Day March 8, 2020, The Women of Denim led by Lucie Gemser, owner of Sphynx along with Carved in Blue, Artistic Milliners, Sportswear International and Bluezone Munich organized the first event in NYC. Held at the showroom of Artistic Millners, I was pleased to attend and be a part of the conversation. The dynamic chat was moderated by Sabine Kuhnl of Sportswear International and Angela Valasquez of Rivet. Thank you to Sourcing Journal for quoting me in your article. And others shared how they are helping encourage the next generation of women. Courage and perseverance are qualities that denim artist and educator Holly Brown promotes in her classroom at an all-girls school in New York. “What I try to instill is resilience and confidence—and it’s something that we really have to teach,” she said. “I don’t allow the words ‘I can’t’ in my classroom.” (Rivet March 13, 2020, written by Angela Valasquez) Read the full article in Sourcing Journal's Rivet magazine here. Please join me for the opening reception on January 30, 6-8pm at 547 W 27th Street, 5th floor NYC Special thanks to Officina +39 and Tonello SRL without whom this piece would not have been possible. Feeling blue can refer to being melancholic and depressed. Conversely, blue is known to calm the mind and body. The color blue can slow human metabolism and can produce a meditative effect. In nature, blue is reflected in the sky, water, earth, and fire. It is associated with open spaces, intuition, imagination and inspiration.“The Blues describes music; such as rhythm and blues, bluegrass and jazz. Blue is associated with ideology like the democrats and blue states. “Blue has no dimension, it is beyond dimensions.” - Yves Klein |
